If you’re searching for an apartment in the Lansing area, there are a number of things you should take into consideration before signing a lease somewhere. At Westbay Management Company, we understand it can be difficult to remember all these things while in the midst of apartment hunting, which is why we’re sharing the following tips to help you find the right rental for your needs, lifestyle and budget. While this list in no way details everything you should look for or avoid in a potential apartment, it’s a great place to start!
Finding an apartment that’s centrally located among all the places you frequent – such as work, family/friend’s homes, public transportation, restaurants, grocery stores, nightlife and entertainment options, etc. – is crucial. Google Maps simplifies this task by enabling you to type in the apartment’s address and easily determine the distance to all the places that matter most to you. Also try to keep an eye on your cell phone to see if you have good reception throughout the property.
Appliances and Amenities
While appliances such as dishwashers and clothes washers/dryers are optional, they certainly make life easier. If you’re someone who doesn’t mind taking trips to a local laundromat or washing dishes by hand, then finding a place without these appliances can certainly save you money, but if you can’t imagine your day-to-day routine without these types of conveniences, you’ll want to make sure you find an apartment that either offers them in each unit or has a facility onsite.
Amenities such as fitness centers, pools, business centers, etc. can also add a lot of value to the property and make it a more enjoyable place to live, so be sure to inquire about these types of features as well. We also suggest you ask which internet/cable provider the apartment works with to make sure you approve.
Safety of the Complex and the Neighborhood
Safety and security are among the most important things to evaluate when apartment hunting and for very obvious reasons. Things such as whether or not it’s a gated community, what types of locks they have on the doors and whether or not they offer onsite security guards are all good indications of the emphasis they place on residents’ safety and well-being. You should also research local crime statistics online or request this information from your local police department via their non-emergency phone line.
Additionally, be sure to ask what the noise levels are generally like, as well as the average resident’s age range to get a feel for whether or not this place may be too noisy (or too quiet) for your liking.
This may seem like a minor thing, but when your hands are full with groceries or it’s the middle of a harsh Michigan winter, you’re going to want to be able to park within close proximity of your apartment. Whether they have a parking garage, open or covered parking spaces and how many spots they allot for non-resident visitors are good questions to ask before you make the decision to sign a lease.
If you currently have pets or have any reason to believe you might have pets in the next few years, you should learn the ins and outs of their pet policy, as they vary tremendously from one complex to the next. If you’re not familiar with such policies, you could end up paying far more than you originally anticipated.
Storage and Outdoor Space
Many people learn that their new apartment doesn’t offer enough storage space the hard way, after they’ve already signed the lease and moved in. Try and get an accurate estimate of how much space you need to store all your items before you even set out on a property tour, this way you’ll instantly know if it’s going to work for you. If having a balcony, yard or patio is important to you, be sure to ask about these as well.
